So two exciting changes to my living space in the same day.

1) The bathroom door, which always sticks in the summer and drives me crazy, has been leveled! I don't know why it feels so mindblowing to open/shut the door and feel no resistance. I think that, standing next to my bathroom sink, putting my hand on that back-of-the-door towel rack and pulling, my body expects to exert a substantial amount of effort. I have been training it to do this for two years. For it to swing freely instead makes me feel a little scared and a little bit like a superman.

2) Shelves! I got shelves! These are adorable tiny cubbyhole-sized shelves that stack taller than I am. Even though I was pretty tired today, I got so excited about sticking things in shelves that I... well, here I am, up at 1:30AM on a work night again, aren't I? I discovered some possessions (and pasta!) that I had totally forgotten I had, which is kind of scary because I haven't even been here that long, have I? Have I???

I have suddenly realized that, in my perfect room, all the walls would be filled with shelves. Ideally the shelves would be of different widths and heights (in a pleasing and regular arrangement, of course), and some of the lower shelves would be drawers, and hey while we're at it, there would be a way to cover/uncover select shelves or turn them away for more wallspace.

But I totally love the idea of owning so few belongings, and so many shelves, that literally every one of my things would have a shelf it belonged to. It would make it so much easier to find things, and it would be so satisfying to have track of everything you own and know where everything goes and never accidentally buy two extra cans of baking soda or be unable to find your gym pants. Oh, need duct tape? Just go to the cutting-and-adhesives drawer. Packing away your board games after a wild night? Hey look, there's a couple Dominion-sized gaps in your deck-building games shelf.

It should not be surprising that I spend roughly 10% of my time in any RPG organizing my inventory.

COURSEWORK: One essay down, three to go. Progress: OK. I hope.

DISSERTATION: One weekend of fieldwork down, three to go. Progress: OK. I've successfully used the res meter and total station unsupervised and got valid results - unfortunately those results show there's not much there! (At least, not between 75cm and 150cm below the current ground surface). The local volunteer society have been extremely welcoming and helpful and I'm really worried that they'll be disappointed. I think "geophys" has a magical reputation to it - but it can't find what isn't there, or what's buried too deply for it to reach.

I may have been brutally maligning Dr. McScaryProfessor, PhD, over the last few months. Just bumped into her on the street; she asked "so, am I going to see you at some point?" and was very friendly and nice. Oh dear. Perhaps the whole time I've been thinking "I don't have anything worth showing her, and she's not very forthcoming in emails, and can be quite reserved in person, and I can never find her outside of her office hours...", she's been thinking "I hope she comes and talks to me soon". Oh well. Luckily she's here all summer and seems much more available now too.

I've mostly been haunting OtherSupervisor, he of the green shirt and khakhi fishing vest (both of which had been replaced by a blue t-shirt today, MADNESS); he's fielded a few frantic phonecalls of the "I can't remember how to do the manual orientation setting function on the TST" variety and also came in on Sunday night so I could drop the res meter off so Doc Thornton could have it for Monday (today). He showed me how to despike my data from the res survey today.

DANCING: After a very tiring weekend (9am-8pm survey+transport for my dissertation project, both days) OF COURSE going dancing on Sunday night at the Bungalows and Bears Sunday Swing Thing was the most sensible thing to do. I had some really nice dances with MathGreek, Daf, Scrabbles McNorton and - um, no nickname for K****** yet. Up. Mr Chippadee, as that's what his wife is called. The Philospher was there also, we have been swopping sewing tips lately. Nice. MathGreek's coming over for breakfast and to buy my bike off me at some point (and by "buy", I mean "have for free", though I may ask for reimbursement for the helmet and padlock as they were bought new and are in good nick; the bike needs a full service and only cost me £20 two years ago anyway.

WORK: Um. Of course applying for a casual job at Subway is the logical thing to do when I have a dissertation to write.

LIFE: I want to stay in the UK. Trying to think of ways to make this happen. Need to talk to people about PhDs but having trouble getting past coursework (yet, strangely, not yet panicking about it; either I am prepared, or totally desensitised to my impending doom). I really, really want to stay. I should be organising more things. I don't know where to start - I think I'm a bit afraid of investing heaps in it and then failing - but I'll definitely fail if I don't get my act together ASAP. So many things to sort out - especially a place to stay after September! Daf and MathGreek have both offered me live-in cook duties... Cheeky sods.

CRAFTS: Nope.

I had first read The Great Gatsby when I was in high school, many years ago. All I could remember was that I really liked it. I thought it was poetic. It was one of my favorite assigned books, yet the only detail I could recall was spoilerCollapse ) But I could not remember what happened to lead to that event. Well, let's face it, it's been over 10 years since I graduated H.S. and my memory is not the best.

With Baz Luhrmann's version coming out this May I wanted to reread it. I feel like I enjoyed the book much more now than when I was in high school. Having the scenes from Baz's film play in my mind enhanced the experience. I gasped and face-palm at certain points in the film when I finally recalled the events that lead to the end.

Baz knows how to make gorgeous films. The visuals were so stimulating. I saw it 3 times, so far. Once in 3D and I can say I liked it better in 3D.

I am also so glad that it remained 90% true to the story. Almost all of the dialogue is straight from the book.

A friend of mine, who is not a fan of Luhrmann's films said: "Baz never strays from directing his actors to highly stylize their performances, therefore his characters never feel real.
That is what I like about Baz. The way he does it, it works. Especially for Gatsby. He's life was stylized for Daisy. Who was he really? He reinvented himself into an idea of who he should have been to impress others, especially Daisy. And then he pays the price for it. That is why Baz was the perfect director for the story and the decade of Gatsby.

It is certainly a tragic story, and the moral is never put people on pedestals. They'll only let you down. Book: 5 out of 5 Green lights Film: 5 out 5 Little Parties That Never Killed Nobody.

The soundtrack: With the exception of Jay-Z, who I can't stand, I love the soundtrack. I wish Jay-Z would just shut up. "No Church in the Wild" should be instrumental because I like the beat, but his rapping - UGH!
The compilation of songs is a good mix of a fun party and then empty sadness.

Good interview:

  • Czemu my to w ogóle robimy? Bo możemy. A poza tym, bo LJ jest mało aktywny ostatnio i niektórzy pragną spotkać innych aktywnych użytkowników.
